Fourth Annual GMAI Summer Course Comes to a Successful Close

The Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI), an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), offered for the fourth time the summer course “Introduction to Audiovisual Production: Film and Television,” in collaboration with New York University’s Opportunity Program and One Race Global Film Foundation. The course which began June 1 came to a close last Friday, June 26.
The objective of the course was to equip students with the skills necessary to work in the film and television industry. Seventeen students successfully completed the course, four of whom were Haitian students that received scholarships through Wyclef Jean’s organization, Yele Haiti.
Course Participants: Blandish Jean, Dilenia Hernandez, Deivis Fermin, Foreste Christ-Lord, Guillermo Emilio Molina, Jonathan Pimentel, Jose De Leon, Judin Merveus, Karen Eliana Estevez, Katiuska Garcia, Kelvin Mejia, Nelson Peralta, Raysa Montes de Oca, Robert Holguin, Sophonie Zidor, Violeta Lockhart and Watson Balmyr.
During the course, students learned about all aspects of the production process. Through out the four-week program, students realized the following projects: the creation of a 30 second commercial or public service announcement using Final Cut Pro; the development of a 3 page script using Final Draft; and the creation of four 10-15 minute films.
On June 26, GMAI held a ceremony for the seventeen students that participated in the Introduction to Audiovisual Production for Film and Television course. In addition to presenting certificates of achievement, the ceremony featured the screening of student works realized throughout the four weeks. During the ceremony, GMAI, NYU’s Opportunity Programs and One Race Global Film Foundation also announced the students that have been awarded scholarships to partake in a six-week film course at New York University.
Scholarship Recipients: Carlos Andrés Peralta Cruz, Crisermy Mercado, Cristina Zapata Taveras, Johanna Jiménez, Luvil González Peña and Ramón Alfonso Peña Rodríguez.
The success of the course was made possible thanks to the enthusiastic participation of staff members from all three organizing institutions.

Since 2006, more than 75 students have graduated from this course and more than 80 short films have been produced.
GMAI is dedicated to providing up-and-coming professionals in the television and film industry with comprehensive instruction in the latest trends in audiovisual production, as part of its overall mission to expand the multimedia industry of the Dominican Republic. The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a highly qualified Dominican audiovisual industry that significantly contributes to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the nation.
