About GMAI

Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI) is a premier education center in audiovisual matters devoted to initiating young talents, training of seasoned multimedia professionals, and enhancing public awareness, understanding and appreciation of Media Arts.

GMAI places special emphasis on television and film production and carries out its programs on site and online (in coordination with the Univirtual Global Dominicana)

GMAI is created, developed and operated by the Fundacion Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD).

Mission

The mission of GMAI is to incite young talented people for careers in Media Arts, create well-trained and highly professional work force in the field of multimedia, and by these means contribute to the development of a strong national multimedia industry and its successful partnership with leading international institutions and projects. At the same time, through its numerous programs directed to general audiences, the GMAI promotes and enhances the overall understanding and appreciation of Media Arts and their role in the society.

Vision

The vision of GMAI is to be the key building block for a well developed and highly professional Dominican media arts industry that makes a significant contribution to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the country.

Throughout the year, GMAI regularly offers introductory, intermediate and advanced courses. It also organizes cultural events that promote a better understanding of media arts, like screenings, discussion panels, interviews with filmmakers, and others.

In order to accomplish its mission, GMAI partners with numerous renowned international institutions, such as New York University and its Opportunities Program, One Race Films, Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television de Cuba, NALIP, among others.

History

Fundacion Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in collaboration with its international partners, has offered training programs in Media Arts since its beginnings in the year 2000. Following its mission to respond to the country's needs in socio-economic development and to promote modernization, particularly by means of creating better human resources, FUNGLODE has quickly identified the field of Media Arts as the one lacking quality training opportunities, exhibiting high interest and talent among Dominican population, and offering great possibilities to enhance the country's economy and competitiveness.

With the help of its sister institution in the United States, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), created in the year 2002, it has reached out to new partners and opened new programs. The series of educational activities has eventually resulted in an ongoing capacity building offering in Media Arts, so the idea of establishing a permanent training center surfaced.

GMAI was officially launched and presented to national and international audiences during the first edition of the DR Global Film Festival, on November 9, 2006.
