Santo Domingo, July 28, 2008

Today, July 28, 2008, the Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI), an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), will present the conference, “Educational and Cultural Television, the Case of Brazil: Concepts, Laws, Development and Future.”  The presentation will be given by Sérgio Sá Leião of the National Film Agency of Brazil, and will examine the steps taken by the Government of Brazil to further develop educational and cultural programming. The event will take place at 7:00 pm at FUNGLODE Headquarters in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Sérgio Sá Leião holds a bachelors degree in Journalism and a masters degree in Public Policy and Marketing from the Universidad Federal de Rio de Janeiro. He has worked as a consultant in the areas of audiovisual arts and entertainment. He has served as both the Secretary for Cultural Policy and the Minister of Culture for the Ministry of Culture of Brazil. Since March of this year, he has worked as Director for the National Film Agency of Brazil.

The National Film Agency of Brazil was created in 2001 by the Government of Brazil in order to advance the development of the audiovisual industry in the country through public policy, investment, means of regulating film, television and video markets, and audiovisual innovation. One of the Agency’s principal objectives is to increase the number of co-productions between independent Brazilian and foreign companies.

GMAI is dedicated to providing up-and-coming professionals in the television and film industry with comprehensive instruction in the latest trends in audiovisual production, as part of its overall mission to expand the multimedia industry of the Dominican Republic. The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a highly qualified Dominican audiovisual industry that significantly contributes to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the nation.

GMAI regularly offers introductory, intermediate and advanced courses. It also organizes events that promote greater understanding of the media arts, such as conferences, screenings and interviews with filmmakers.
