News Students Studying Film at New York University Wrap Up Their Course
The five students selected for the summer 2010 film course given by New York University’s Opportunity Programs in collaboration with the Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI) and the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) concluded their learning activities with the presentation of their own film projects. The Dominican students participating at the fifth edition of the program were Elena Pérez, a student from the Divina Providencia Education Center; Ramón Moisés Abreu Damián, from APEC University; Annie Patricia Jiménez Rodríguez, from the Catholic University of Santo Domingo; Martha María Pichardo Batista, of De La Salle College and Andreina Jeannete Vander-Horst Valette. Throughout the six-week course, students received training in the production of short films, commercials and sequence photography among other related subjects. All together there were 13 students, including the five Dominicans, who took part in the course. The projects presented by the Dominican students at the course’s conclusion included: “My Life with You,” by Moisés Abreu; “Phone Companies,” by Annie Jiménez; “Froot Loops,” by Elena Pérez; “Forgetting Lily,” by Martha Pichardo (editor); “Which Gift Would You Rather Receive?” by Andreina Vander-Horst; “Help the Environment,” by Moisés Abreu and “Sunflowers” by Annie Jiménez. The closing ceremony was led by Irving Vincent, director of the program. Taína Rodríguez, coordinator of the Audiovisuals Department of FUNGLODE and GMAI attended the event as a representative of both organizations. The students chosen to attend the course were selected on the basis of their academic achievement and professional interests. The GMAI is dedicated to providing promising professionals in the television and film industry with comprehensive training in the latest film production tendencies as part of its general mission to promote the film and multimedia industry in the Dominican Republic. The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a high quality audiovisual industry that significantly contributes to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the Dominican Republic.
