The Global Media Arts Institute Breaks Into the World of Theater Arts
New York, January 18, 2010

The Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI) presented a workshop on acting with Obie Award winning writer, actor and director, Roger Guenveur Smith, January 12-14, 2010. Twenty aspiring actors interested in theater arts participated in the workshop that emphasized improvisation and coordination of voice and movement.

This course marks the beginning of many projects to come in the area of theater performance. The Global Media Arts Institute, in partnership with Roger Guenveur Smith, is currently in the stages of coordinating the performance of a play featuring students that attended the recent workshop.

GMAI, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is dedicated to providing up-and-coming professionals in the television and film industry with comprehensive instruction in the latest trends in audiovisual production, as part of its overall mission to expand the multimedia industry of the Dominican Republic. The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a highly qualified Dominican audiovisual industry that significantly contributes to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the nation.

About Roger Guenveur Smith

Roger Guenveur Smith has written for both theater and film and has starred and stage performances and has acted in numerous films and television programs. He wrote the Obie Award winning play A Huey P. Newton Story (1995), in which he also performs. The play was later adapted to a film directed by Spike Lee. He has acted in a number of films including: American Gangster (2007),The Bus (1996), Panther (1995), Tales from the Hood (1995), Poetic Justice (1993), Malcolm X (1992), Deep Cover (1992), King of New York (1990), Do the Right Thing (1089),and School Daze (1988). Guenveur Smith has also written and acted in a number of stage productions including: Christopher Columbus 1992 (1992), and Inside the Creole Mafia (1991). The actor’s television appearances include: “Kings”, “Third Watch”, “The Guardian”, “New York Undercover”, “A Different World”, “Cosmic Slop”, “Murphy Brown”, and “Fallen Angels”.
