GFDD, FUNGLODE and the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) in Cuba Will Offer Scholarships to Dominican Students

New York, January 14, 2010

The Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV), of San Antonio de los Baños, is launching a scholarship competition for young Dominicans 22 to 29-years of age interested in studying at the prestigious institution for a period of three years, 2010-2013. Throughout the course of their studies, students will complete an intense and complex study plan, divided into three cycles: Multi-tasking basic training, Year 1; Specialty – Directing Fiction and Directing Documentaries, Sound, Assembling, Direction in Photography, Script and Production, Year II; and Thesis, Year III.

EICTV is an educational project of the New Latin American Film Foundation (FNCL), inaugurated on 15 December, 1986, and headed by writer and Nobel Literature Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Fernando Birri is the school’s founding director.

Scholarships in the areas of direction, production, scriptwriting, documentary filmmaking, photography, sound and editing will be offered. The application deadline is February 4, 2010.

EICTV-GFDD -FUNGLODE Agreement – The International Film and Television School (EICTV) of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba and Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) of the Dominican Republic signed an agreement in December 2006 to cooperate in the fields of education and training. The scope of this agreement includes full scholarships for selected candidates. The school has a cost per student of 15,000 Euros. From 2006 to 2009, GFDD and FUNGLODE have provided scholarship opportunities to seven promising Dominican students.

The National Evaluation Committee– In March, a National Evaluation Committee comprised of filmmakers, sociologists, film critics and artistic and cultural representatives in the Dominican Republic will select a preliminary group of participants based on their artistic skills, creative potential and work history.
The selection determined by the need to balance culturally and professionally, since the school’s goal is to create a cohesive generation that is committed to work in solidarity during their years of study and in their professional lives.

Faithful to the motto, “At Our School One Learns to Do by Doing”, students not only complete the exams at the end of the cycle, they also have ongoing theoretical/practical workshops and have the opportunity to producer extracurricular short films in digital video format. EICTV students also have the opportunity to work with numerous esteemed professors. The outgoing class studied with 292 professors from all around the world.

Dominican General Director of EICTV – Since September 2007, a member of the first graduating class (1990), Tanya Valette, a Dominican, has been the general director of the prestigious academic institution.

EICTV is the only school in the world that has been honored at the 46th Cannes Film Festival with the Roberto Rossellini Award. This award is one of the most prestigious international cultural awards, presented in honor of those who capture the spirit of progress, generosity and humanitarianism characteristic of Roberto Rossellini.

By 2009, 660 students from 52 countries around the world had graduated from EICTV, many of whom have been awarded prizes for their work.
