Dominican Students Conclude Classes at NYU
Santo Domingo, September 9, 2009

On August 13, six Dominican students awarded scholarships from the Global Multimedia Arts Institute (GMAI), New York University's Opportunity Program and the One Race Film Foundation partook in the graduation ceremony to celebrate the completion of the six-week course, during which student productions were screened.

During the course, students were exposed to all aspects of the creation process, from preproduction to postproduction, developing competency in the areas of script and story board development, camera usage, the use of sound and light, directing and acting. Students also learned to edit their own work using Final Cut Pro.

Students completed three projects throughout the semester, focusing on: sequence, dramatization and short film production. In total, students produced 18 different projects.

This year’s scholarship recipients were: Crisermy Mercado (UNIBE), Johanna Jiménez, (Madre y Maestra Pontifical Catholic University), Carlos Peralta (Madre y Maestra Pontifical Catholic University), Ramon Peña (National School of Arts and Trades), Luvil Gonzalez (INTEC) and Cristina Zapata (Colegio San Judas Tadeo).

Each year, GMAI along with New York University's Opportunity Program and the One Race Film Foundation offer scholarships to Dominican students between the ages of 18 and 20 to study various aspects of film and television. Students are selected on the basis of academic achievement and professional interests.

GMAI, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is dedicated to providing up-and-coming professionals in the television and film industry with comprehensive instruction in the latest trends in audiovisual production, as part of its overall mission to expand the multimedia industry of the Dominican Republic. The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a highly qualified Dominican audiovisual industry that significantly contributes to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the nation.
