New York, July 21, 2009

The five Dominican students awarded scholarships by the Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI), New York University’s Opportunity Programs and One Race Film Foundation began their six-week academic program at New York University on July 6.  This year’s academic program includes courses on writing, script analysis and television and film production.

GMAI, together with NYU’s Opportunity Programs and One Race Film Foundation, annually grant scholarships to five Dominican students between the ages of 18 and 20 years to study various aspects of film and television creation. Students are selected based on academic performance and professional interests.

2009 scholarship recipients are: Cristina Zapata Taveras (Colegio San Judas Tadeo), Ramón Alfonso Peña Rodríguez  (Escuela Nacional de Artes y Oficios (ENAO)), Johanna Jiménez (Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, Santiago), Carlos Andrés Peralta Cruz (Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra), and Luvil González Peña (INTEC).

GMAI, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister institute in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is dedicated to providing up-and-coming professionals in the television and film industry with comprehensive instruction in the latest trends in audiovisual production, as part of its overall mission to expand the multimedia industry of the Dominican Republic.

The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a highly qualified Dominican audiovisual industry that significantly contributes to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the nation.
