FUNGLODE Produced Film About Mirabal Sisters and Trujillo Will Be
Screened in Cinemateca and in Various Provinces

Del fondo de la noche, the film that tells the story of the
intersection of the lives of Patricia, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal and
the night of the assassination of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo was screened
this past Sunday, March 1, at Club Maricio Báez.
The President of the Dominican Republic and Honorary President of Global
Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global
Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), Leonel Fernández, as well as members of
the Mirabal family were present at the screening.
The hour-long documentary produced by FUNGLODE will be premiered at
Cinemateca Nacional in Santo Domingo and in Santiago, Puerto Plata, Higüey
and Nagua during the month of March.
The cinematographic production for film and television, winner of the
2008 Philadelphia Documentary & Fiction Festival’s Jury Prize, was realized
by a team of acclaimed Dominican and Spanish professionals, including
Director, Javier Balaguer; Screenwriter, Rafael Sarró; and Director of
Photography, Claudio Chea.
The film is a combination of film and documentary – 80% classic footage
and 20% photographs and archival images. Filming took place over the course
of four weeks in Santo Domingo.
The Screening
The film, which owes its title to the verses of the poem “Hay un país en
el mundo,” by poet Pedro Mir, was screened during a private benefit
function at Club Mauricio Baez, proceeds will go towards educational
programs organized by the Global Media Arts Institute, an initiative of
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global
Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE).
GMAI is dedicated to providing up-and-coming professionals in the
television and film industry with comprehensive instruction in the latest
trends in audiovisual production, as part of its overall mission to expand
the multimedia industry of the Dominican Republic.
The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a highly
qualified Dominican audiovisual industry that significantly contributes to
the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the nation.
GMAI regularly organizes educational programs in collaboration with Escuela
Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños,
Cuba, New York University’s Opportunities Program and One Race Films.

The price of tickets in the provinces is RD$50 per person. All proceeds
will benefit the academic institutions where the screenings take place.
